DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH INFORMATION MANAGEMENT

Way back in the year 2000, the department started to offer the first ever postgraduate degree in Health Information Management. The department has been established to mould young professionals with the capability to collect, organise and disseminate health information. This mission is in reflection of the pioneering spirit of our visionary founder, the late Dr. T.M.A. Pai. The department with its proximity to the hospital allows for well-rounded overall training in all areas of the hospital administration and health information management. This forward-looking course arms students to take independent decisions based on strong technical knowledge that they gain during their study period.

The department provides undergraduate and postgraduate education and training as per the requirements of the Manipal University. It seeks to provide education needed to follow successful and independent careers. The department furthermore is committed to providing opportunities for lifelong learning and development.

B.SC. HEALTH INFORMATION ADMINISTRATION


This three year (6 semesters) program is designed to equip students to take up middle level managerial position that interacts with all levels of health care organizations that use patient data in decision making and everyday operations. They may work in a broad range of settings that span the continuum of healthcare including office based physician practices, nursing homes, home health agencies, mental health facilities, and public health agencies. 

This undergraduate program is designed according to national and International requirements. The curriculum includes pre and para clinical subjects  like Health information management, Health Insurance, Medical coding, Quality Assurance, Medical Ethics, Biostatistics and Epidemiology, Public Health Management, Front Office Management, etc. The students receive intensive practical training in all areas of Health Information Management, thus equipping them fully to take on independent assignments as required.

M.SC. HOSPITAL & HEALTH INFORMATION ADMINISTRATION


It is a two year (four semesters) interdisciplinary program focusing on Health Information Management, Health care administration, Information Technology in Health care and Applied areas in Healthcare.

This is a unique postgraduate program designed based on health care market requirements of India as well as abroad. The course structure is designed systematically, incorporating   intensive training & specialized curriculum, to equip students to multi-task in today’s competitive health care environment. The curriculum includes Pre- and Para- clinical subjects along with Health Information Management, Health Informatics, Hospital Administration, Public Relations, Operations Management, Epidemiology & Biostatistics, Computer Sciences, DBMS and Medical Coding & Billing. MHHIA students also receive hands-on training from different administrative & service departments of the Kasturba Hospital, Manipal. Interested students can also pursue doctoral degree in selected areas of health information management.


WHERE DO HEALTH INFORMATION PROFESSIONALS WORK?



Traditional settings include: Managing an HIM medical records department, cancer registry, coding, trauma registry, transcription, quality improvement, release of information, patient admissions, compliance auditor, physician accreditation, utilization review, physician offices and risk management.

Non-traditional settings include: consulting firms, government agencies, law firms, insurance companies, correctional facilities, extended care facilities, pharmaceutical research, information technology and medical software companies.
Since accreditation of hospitals and other health care settings becoming increasingly important in the National scenario with agencies like NABH, JCI etc. involved in accreditation, role of health information managers are inevitable.

 HEALTH INFORMATICS LABORATORY


Health Information Management Department has a modern, well equipped Health Informatics Lab, with more than 25 workstation with sophisticated software required for advanced training in Health Informatics, Computer Application in Health, Medical Transcription and Database Management System. All the systems have internet connectivity to enable students learning process for acquiring information on recent developments in health information management and research. This lab is also intended to facilitate student’s participation in Seminars and Continuing Health Information Education Program.

DEPARTMENT HIGHLIGHTS


The department boasts of eminent faculty specialized in various fields of health Information management. The department is engaged in continuous up gradation in terms of knowledge acquisition and faculty development. At present the department has six fulltime faculties of whom, three of them hold doctoral degrees and three are in the process of acquiring the same soon. The department has eminent visiting faculties who periodically come for delivering lectures. The department also conducts regular continuing education program to enrich the knowledge of its students and faculties on recent advances in health care industry. The students are also provided with ample opportunities to interact with health care industry experts.
The department has an on-going funded project sponsored by Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR), New Delhi. Similar activities in the department help to provide hands on research exposure to the students.
All the passed out students of this course are well-placed at various well known healthcare organizations. The department is well-regarded in the healthcare industry as one whose students are capable of taking on independent responsibilities and making a mark for themselves.
